Tougher teacher training to raise reading standards

Greater emphasis will be placed on teachers' ability to help children learn to read, control unruly pupils and educate those with special needs or disabilities under a revised training framework announced by the schools watchdog today.

The new measures will also alter the way teacher training courses are assessed, with inspectors rating their effectiveness in fewer categories according to tougher criteria, as well as assigning one overall score.
