The only university based in the Highlands and islands of Scotland, UHI was granted higher education status in 2000 and full universtity status earlier this year. 23.5 per cent of the 85 first year students who went up to study in 2008 didn't return the following year. Five changed institutions and 20 dropped out of higher education.

The information is taken from HESA data of full time first degree students who started university in 2008/9 and didn't return for their second year studies for the the academic year 2009/10
